How much does a new driveway cost?

The cost of a new driveway depends on its size, the surface you choose and the amount of preparation and additional work required.

Block paving, tarmac, core gravel and Indian stone all have different installation costs. Features such as decorative borders, raised kerbs, entrance drainage, steps, manholes and difficult excavation can also affect the final price.

Our driveway calculator takes these factors into account to provide an estimated installed-price range including VAT.

How does the driveway cost calculator work?

Start by entering the length and width of your driveway in metres. If your driveway is made up of several areas, you can add additional rectangular sections and the calculator will combine them to calculate the total area.

You can then select your driveway surface and the relevant installation options. The calculator uses these selections to produce an estimated installed-price range.

The calculator is designed to provide a useful budgeting guide rather than replace a professional site survey.

Which driveway surfaces can I calculate?

The calculator currently provides estimates for four popular driveway surfaces:

Block paving – a versatile paved driveway available in different styles and finishes.

Tarmac – a practical, durable surface particularly suited to larger driveways.

Core gravel – a gravel driveway system using stabilisation cells beneath the decorative gravel.

Indian stone – a natural sandstone driveway providing a more traditional appearance.

The installation method and pricing structure differs between surfaces, so selecting the correct surface is important when calculating your estimate.

How much does block paving cost per m²?

Block paving prices vary according to the size of the driveway and the type of paving selected.

Our calculator automatically considers the total driveway area and the selected block-paving option when producing the estimate.

Normal groundwork, excavation and standard perimeter edge restraint are included within the calculator's block-paving base price. Special visible kerbs and other selected extras are calculated separately.

How much does a tarmac driveway cost?

Tarmac driveway costs depend significantly on the total area being surfaced.

The calculator estimates the cost of the normal groundwork and complete tarmac installation and allows additional visible borders to be included separately.

Is a gravel driveway cheaper than block paving?

Core gravel can be less expensive than some block-paving options, but the final difference depends on driveway size, gravel choice, borders and site conditions.

A properly constructed core gravel driveway still requires excavation, a suitable foundation and installation of the gravel stabilisation system. It should therefore not be compared with simply spreading loose gravel over an existing surface.

Can I calculate the cost of an Indian stone driveway?

Yes. Select Indian Stone in the calculator to receive an estimated installed cost based on your driveway area.

The calculation includes the normal groundwork and installation required for the Indian sandstone driveway. Selected borders and other additional features are calculated separately.

Does the driveway price include excavation?

Normal excavation and waste removal are included within the calculator's standard driveway rates.

If you believe the project requires additional or particularly difficult excavation, you can select the appropriate option and the calculator will adjust the estimate.

If you're unsure about the ground conditions, choose Not sure. The calculator will not automatically add an excavation surcharge, and the ground conditions can instead be assessed during a site survey.

Does having an existing concrete driveway increase the cost?

Not necessarily.

An existing concrete driveway may require additional excavation depending on its construction, thickness and site conditions, but concrete alone does not automatically mean an additional charge.

If you're uncertain, the safest option is to select Not sure and have the existing driveway assessed as part of a site survey.

Does the calculator include driveway drainage?

You can add ACO entrance drainage to your calculation by entering the approximate number of linear metres required.

Drainage requirements vary between properties, so the final drainage design should be confirmed during a site inspection.

Can I include driveway borders and kerbs?

Yes. Where appropriate for your selected driveway surface, you can add special borders or kerbs and enter their approximate length in linear metres.

The calculator applies the relevant allowance for the selected type of border or edging.

Standard edge restraint is already included where specified within the underlying driveway system, so the calculator is designed to avoid charging twice for normal edging.

Can I include steps and manholes?

Yes. The calculator allows you to include standard steps, double or wide steps and inset/recessed manholes.

These items are added to the driveway estimate using standard calculator allowances.

Unusual steps, extensive level changes, retaining structures or complex drainage and civil engineering work will require an individual site assessment.

Does the driveway calculator include VAT?

Yes. The main estimated price range shown to homeowners includes VAT.

This makes it easier to understand the approximate overall project budget rather than presenting a trade-style price with VAT still to be added.

How accurate is the driveway cost calculator?

The calculator is designed to provide a realistic estimated price range, not a guaranteed quotation.

Every property is different. Ground conditions, access, levels, drainage requirements, unusual excavation and other site-specific factors can affect the final cost.

An on-site inspection is therefore required before a final quotation can be provided.

What if my driveway is larger than 150m²?

Driveways over 150m² are not automatically priced by the calculator.

Larger projects can have different site, material, access and construction considerations, so rather than extrapolating a potentially inaccurate price, we recommend requesting an individual quotation.

A driveway measuring exactly 100m² can still be calculated.

How do I measure my driveway?

For a simple rectangular driveway, measure the approximate length and width in metres and enter both measurements into the calculator.

For an irregular driveway, divide it into several approximate rectangular sections. Enter each section separately and the calculator will automatically combine them to determine the total area.

Don't worry if your measurements aren't perfect. They are being used to produce an initial estimate; accurate measurements can be taken during a site survey.

What is the best driveway surface for my property?

There isn't one surface that's best for every driveway.

Block paving provides extensive design choice, tarmac can be particularly practical for larger areas, core gravel provides a different appearance and drainage characteristics, while Indian stone can provide a traditional natural-stone finish.

The right choice depends on the property, desired appearance, budget, maintenance expectations and site conditions.
